How to make your own molds

It’s amazing how resourceful cake artists can be! Silicone molds can be bought in all shapes and sizes, and prices can vary enormously. If you order on eBay as I do, and you’re willing to wait for delivery from China, they’re quite cheap. Unfortunately in some cases, that extends to the quality too. Order from reputable sources and the quality is better, but prices can be high. So when I came across this YouTube video from Verusca Walker, I was intrigued. It seems you can make your own from ingredients most people already have in the house ๐Ÿ™† I fully intend to try this, but in the meantime take a look for yourselves. You don’t need to be a cake decorator to appreciate this either. If you’re a crafter, the possibilities are endless. Verusca’s method is food safe, but YouTube has plenty of similar tutorials if this isn’t a necessity for you ๐Ÿ˜Š

Enjoy!

Birthdays….and other celebrations

Hello again

The last couple of weeks in our house have been eventful to say the least. Mostly in a nice way…..some…..not so much ๐Ÿ˜

We’ve been celebrating birthdays and qualifications, which has been lovely, but I’ve not been my usual self, which has not! The good news is I now have a diagnosis for the chest pains and tummy discomfort. An endoscopy revealed a hiatus hernia and gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) which is now being treated. The even better news is that my daughter in law has excelled herself career wise, and had a grand ‘Sparkle Party’ to celebrate. The same weekend, we also celebrated my husband’s and son’s birthdays too, so it’s been quite a busy time altogether ๐Ÿ˜‹

I’ve mentioned before that my children always request a novelty cake for their birthdays (well ok, sometimes I choose if I have a lightbulb moment ๐Ÿ’ก) This year, my son requested that I recreate a white chocolate ย mouse ๐Ÿ like the ones he used to get in the pic and mix as a child. For my husband I made a mint chocolate chip cake, and for my daughter in law, a ‘sparkly’ graduation cap.

Many thanks to my Mum and daughter for putting the birthday buffet together, and to my family for the fun!

Unfortunately, the next family birthday cake I’m required to make isn’t till August ๐Ÿ˜” as although my nephew and sister both have significant birthdays before then, they don’t live locally, so in the meantime I’ll just have to do lots of ‘practicing’ ! ๐Ÿ˜œ

Until next time

P.S. Watch out for mint choc chip, and raspberry and white chocolate cake pops later this week! *Ahem* Gill ๐Ÿ˜

Eureka!

Well ok, perhaps Eureka is pushing it a bit, but…….. I finally managed to get my cakes baked ๐Ÿ˜Š ย Nothing exciting to show you yet, but the actual cakes are baked, and waiting to be transformed. I have two family birthdays coming up. Hubby’s on Tuesday, and son’s on 3rd May. On the in between Sunday (30th) we’re having a joint family get together. As I can’t let Tuesday go by without some sort of cakiness, I’ll be making a small one for hubby, and a bigger one – 3D – for Sunday. We’re also going out to eat with my son and daughter in law on Tuesday for hubby’s birthday. My son has set me a birthday cake ‘challenge’, but I won’t tell you what it is yet, and I’ll be freezing his cake before I carve and cover it. I will be working on the smaller cake tomorrow though, so will keep you posted ๐Ÿ˜‹

Until then, I’m away to my bed!

Cake? I see no cake!

I can hardly believe it myself, but yet another day has gone by without me baking a cake ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I know! Madness isn’t it? I’ve managed to doze off again today, I really must be playing catch up from last week I think.

Being dozy (literally) I also forgot to take any food out of the freezer, so having eggs aplenty, I set about making a quiche, I mean it is baking, just not cake, right?

Update: I fell asleep again in the middle of writing this! I’m thinking of checking for gas leaks now!

Anyway, back to my baking, here are some pics of the quiche and a random apple crumble ๐Ÿ˜

Oh…And I almost forgot! Myย ‘stylish and traditional’ catering hat arrived yesterday ๐Ÿ˜ I think stylish and traditional may be pushing it a bit…..More basic and functional if you ask me. Still, that’s ok, because that’s all I need it to be ๐Ÿ˜

My fancy shower cap can now actually be used as …..,.A shower cap!

How would you describe it?

Fotor_149292588190846

That settles it, I have to bake now I have the hat!

Keep you posted

I had good intentions….honest

Hi,

Earlier I posted that I had slept quite well, and had every intention of baking. Well guess what? I pretty much slept all day too! Think I must have been playing catch up ๐Ÿ˜ ย So no baking happened unfortunately, or fortunately as it happens. Confused? Here’s why. I intended doing some pre baking, and freezing the cakes for decoration next week, but after checking my emails found I didn’t need to anyway ๐Ÿ˜–

Instead, I’ve spent a few hours revisiting an excellent tutorial by Rachel Hill on the Pretty Witty Cakes website. Not having much ‘disposable income’ I’m just subscribed as a free member, but there are some really good free tutorials on there. The one I’ve been watching again takes a beginner through making a two tier cake, including applying a crumb coat, fondant, covering a board, making flowers, applying ribbon….The whole thing. Rachel talks you through everything, and it’s an excellent resource. It’s broken down into 10 lessons too, so not too daunting either. Plus, even though I’ve crumb coated and applied fondant to a fair few cakes, there are still hints and tips I’d completely forgotten about from my first viewing (and which could have saved me a lot of frustration!)

I highly recommend signing up, a free tutorial comes out every Friday, and if like me, you can’t commit to a paid membership, you can buy individual tutorials if you see one you really like โค

Bump in the road pt 2

Apologies for not posting in a while, I’m still recovering from my ‘Bump in the road’. I haven’t felt well enough to bake, or even eat my Easter Egg for that matter! (This is serious, me not up to eating chocolate is a rare thing๐Ÿ˜ต) Sleep has been elusive too ๐Ÿ˜ด However last night I went to sleep in the dark, and woke up this morning to daylight. Yes! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ™‹โœŠ

Hopefully that will give me the incentive (and the energy) to get the flour and eggs out today ๐Ÿ˜œ I’ll keep you posted, but until then,

Happy Easter!

Hi all, I hope that wherever you are, you will have a lovely Easter.

Today I want to forget about the possibility of nuclear missiles, but to remember all of our brothers and sisters living in war zones, or having to become refugees. To remember also the lost and lonely on our own doorsteps. Today I am thankful and hopeful for an end to their misery. Because miracles do happen. Today I will celebrate the miracle of Jesus while praying for those less fortunate than us.

I shall be spending today with my loved ones, eating, chatting, laughing and generally feeling very blessed to have my family close. A great big thank you to James and Abigail for hosting once again. We shall also be celebrating my lovely mother in law’s birthday (a couple of days early, but who’s counting?) It’s a busy time for birthdays in the family this next few weeks. M.I. L. on tuesday, my hubby’s the week after, then James the week after that. And in between, a big celebration for Abigail’s new qualification and job! Lots of cake opportunities! ๐Ÿ˜Š

This week I made a cake for a lovely man, Ray, who is 70 years young. It was a surprise cake ordered by his equally lovely wife Lindah. I really hope he liked it, and that he enjoyed his family celebration yesterday ๐Ÿ˜˜

Fotor_149218351974849

That’s him in the bus! Ray rides the buses, chatting to strangers, and whenever it’s appropriate, he spreads the Word. Remarkable ๐Ÿ˜‡

Also this week, I’ve tried out a ‘watercolour buttercream’ technique, and the on trend ‘drip cake’. Both on the same cake! It’s not bad but I think I will have to tweak my ganache ratio, as it was way too thick! Also I was a bit heavy handed with the food colouring ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ I was going for a pastel yellow, not neon custard! Oops! ๐Ÿ˜‚

I also made an Easter themed birthday cake for Rose ๐ŸŒน (M.I.L.)

Here they are, with a recap of my other Easter goodies ๐Ÿฐ

Until next time,

A bump in the road

Hi, my attempts at normalcy hit a little obstacle over the weekend, with an unexpected trip to the hospital that ended up lasting three days ๐Ÿ˜ท

However, I’m fine now and eager to ‘catch up’ so here goes!

Friday evening was spent with family, some on stage and some not, at Greenbrook Theatre Group’s Murder Mystery Production ‘Who killed the soap star’. It was a great performance and hilariously, no one guessed the murderer! It’s the first production I haven’t taken part in for quite a while, so it felt a bit weird being in the audience at first, but I soon got engrossed in the show, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had pie and peas supper in the interval, and cakes provided by the bakers in the Society. This was my contribution ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ˜‹ but there was a fantastic selection. I sampled a blueberry and lemon cupcake made by Sue, one of the producers, which was absolutely delicious. Must ask for the recipe ๐Ÿ˜Š Despite the temptation, I only had the one, but it was cake paradise on that table!

Well, that’s all from me till later, I have a couple of cakes to finish, and they’re not going to do themselves!

Playtime….Or making faces pt 2!

Hello,

A little later than promised (I’ve had a few bad days ๐Ÿ˜ž) but here is an update on my attempts at using the face moulds. I’ve given the male ‘duo’ a bit of a smile and some eyes, but I’ve had a go at painting on my ‘princess’. I’ve not got the steadiest hand, but the fine brushes I bought have been great, so I’m quite pleased so far ๐Ÿ˜Š ย She still needs work, and a body for that matter, but I think she’s looking quite pretty โค

I’m hoping the addition of eyebrows might make her look a bit less stary eyed!

Anyway, tomorrow I will be baking cakes for the first performance of ‘Who killed the soap star’, the murder mystery play by Greenbrook Theatre Group, so I may play a little more while I’m waiting for them to come out of the oven! My son and daughter in law, and lots of my friends are performing so ‘break a leg’ my loves ๐Ÿ’• and I’ll see you there!

In the meantime,

Play time! ๐Ÿ˜Š

I bought some fondant face moulds recently, and have started to have a play with them. One is a double mould with more ‘realistic’ features in two different sizes, and the other is known as a ‘princess’ face mould. This would be great for all those ‘Disney’ characters for example. It has very large eyes and a more rounded face. What is great about them all is you’re not stuck with what comes out of the mould. You can change things up by opening up the mouth to create a bigger smile, give it some dimples, a frown, wrinkles….. anything really. So far, I’ve just mastered how to get the fondant out of the mould with all the features intact! (Light dusting of cornflour) Well ok, I might have had a LOT of help from YouTube as well ๐Ÿ˜‹ ย This is basically how they came out before any changes, apart from a wider smile on the princess face! Also please ignore her over pink complexion, I got a bit carried away with the food colouring!

I’ll be back tomorrow with some added features, but for now that’s it ๐Ÿ˜Š

Actually, I just thought you’d like to know that I managed the hubby’s apple crumble without dropping it on the floor or burning myself ๐Ÿ˜€ I further redeemed myself by making him some chocolate chip cookies too ๐Ÿ˜‡

That’s definitely it for now
